The Petertide Fair is a great day out for all the family to enjoy. But let's not forget its other main purpose - to raise as much money as we can for our causes. This year we have chosen two - one home and one overseas. We split the proceeds from the Fair equally between the causes, helping with the completion of important projects.

The  local cause this year is the Thomas Coram Foundation.

Coram works with over 6,000 children, young people and their families each year, transforming their lives through practical help and support. We aim to build self-esteem and well-being, preparing children and young people for a fulfilling adult life.

Coram has been working with disadvantaged children since 1739 when Thomas Coram established the Foundling Hospital, to care for abandoned babies dying on the streets of London.

Over 250 years later, the streets of London are still as dangerous for many children, all too many of whom are growing up without the support of a loving home. Coram transforms the lives of children and young people, helping them to find stability and lead rich independent lives by providing practical help and support.

Coram is one of England's more remarkable organisations. It is not only one of the country's oldest charitable institutions, but is also believed to have been the first to specifically cater to the needs of children. It is a unique combination of ground–breaking modern services based on a rich artistic and musical heritage, with Handel and Hogarth as two of the original Governors.

Over the last year, Coram has worked with 6,000 children, young people and their families in London and beyond. This work takes many forms, but all our services focus on building self–esteem and emotional well being, preparing our children for a fulfilling adult life.

They are based in London

In the Gambia we are supporting the village of Tujering, where a previous Petertide Fair (1996) raised the money to set up a library for the school.  A member of our congregation helped to make that link in 1996, and with others in Hertfordshire has visited the village many times. Most families there lack things we take for granted - appropriate medicine, access to doctors and midwives, basic hygiene.  The children in particular succumb to malaria, diarrhoea and infection.

We aim specifically to:

  • Rebuild the school toilet block, at present in an appallingly unsanitary condition
  • Roof a building to provide a clean kitchen and dining area
  • Supply mosquito nets for younger children and babies
